Health Food Binge
I'm a carnivore at heart. I love me some slow roasted pork shoulder, crispy duck, a prefectly cooked medium rare steak, or a succulent piece of chicken. Yum. I don't ever plan on being vegetarian... however I have gone on a health conscious binge. In my prime, high school days, I was fit. I did every sport I could. After highschool/college I've always tried to be healthy. I'd sign up for the gym and go for a month or two. My diet has always included meat, a lot I suppose, but I tried to include something healthy, whatever that meant. I still felt sluggish, like I was constantly running on E, sometimes a little irritable or grumpy. Something, I thought, needed to change.
My friend Chris turned me onto the Master Cleanse sometime last spring. I tried it, lasted for 6 days, until I went running to my favorite taco truck and downed two pork tacos. Bad idea. It felt like two boulders were sitting in my stomach, never to be digested.
Not sure why, but I decided to try it again. This time I lasted even less time on the Cleanse, but tried something different -- my way. I still consumed the spicy lemonade, laxative tea, and salt flush, but also tried to stick to a soup or salad a day. Oh, and I've been going to the gym. By the 7th day, I was back to eating 3 meals a day, small and very healthy portions. This included granola & yogurt for breakfast, roasted sweet potato/carrot/ginger puree for lunch (my own recipe), and couscous with roasted red peppers and chicken.
It's now day 11 and my diet has consisted mainly of superfoods (couscous, blueberry, yogurt, nuts, and green/red foods) low on fat, carbs, and dairy. Sounds a little drab, right? But everything has tasted great and most importantly and the reason I'm writing about this is that I feel really great. I have more energy (no more nap time for me!) and pretty motivated (hence this post). Don't know how long the health wave is gonna last, but I'll ride it for as long as I can, and will share recipes along the way...
